How the Federal Incentive (STCs) Works

The federal government's Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme reduces the upfront cost of solar through small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Here's the honest version of how it works:

  • Your system earns a number of certificates based on its size, your location and the years remaining until the scheme winds down in 2030
  • In 2026, a 6.6kW system in QLD or NSW earns around 45 certificates. At recent market prices of roughly $36–40 per certificate, that's an incentive of about $1,600–$1,900
  • Your installer almost always claims this on your behalf and applies it as a point-of-sale discount — the prices above already include it

Two things worth knowing: the certificate count steps down every January until the scheme ends in 2030, so the incentive shrinks a little each year. And certificate prices float with the market, which is why quoted “rebate” amounts differ slightly between installers and months.
